San Diego Magazine has a great listing of places to munch outside of the convention hall, just in case you make it downtown to see the sights.
The Con is coming, and several restaurants and bars are planning special events and discounts to lure in the masses. Here are some of the best bets:
Follow the scent of sugar (or the hyped up attendees) to Sprinkles Cupcake‘s “Sprinklesmobile” and nab a free superhero-themed cupcake on Friday, July 13th and Saturday, July 14th. The best place to track ’em down is on Twitter.
The “Invasion of the Pier” promises bites, brews, and bands on the Bay, with 14 local food trucks, plus live music and a beer garden. Confirmed food trucks so far include Devilicious, Asian Persuasion, Sushi Ninjas, Urban Eats and many more. July 13-14, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Broadway Pier. Visit the website for more information and a coupon to save $2 off admission.
East Village Tavern + Bowl is welcoming the costumed masses with one free game of bowling and shoe rental for anyone in costume. You can also score a free game by spending at least $10 on Thursday and Friday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
930 Market St., East Village
Bub’s @ The Ballpark is rolling out a different special each night of the Con, including Zombie Apocaplyse Wing Night on Wednesday (.25 cent wings and “horror hour” until 9 p.m.), Cape Night on Thursday (drink specials and grilled cheese sandwiches, plus an extended happy hour), $1 sliders and $10 pitchers on Friday, and $12 pitchers of “Truebub’s punch” on Saturday.
715 J Street., East Village
The District has created a Comic-Con themed sandwich dubbed the “Superherowich.” The double-decker sandwich features three types of cheese (muenster, smoked mozzarella, and swiss) stacked with tomatoes and basil on green sourdough bread. It’s served with a side of tomato fennel soup. Show your Comic-Con pass and the deal gets even sweeter: a bag of chips and and a drink come complimentary with any sandwich purchase.
1021 Market St, East Village
The Village at 631 is offering a 15% discount for Comic-Con attendees (with event pass) or anyone in costume all weekend long. The spacious East Village cafe is a good spot to fuel up with a pint of craft beer, glass of wine, or a fancy coffee. Food items range from $5 bar bites to croissant sandwiches, and acai bowls. On Saturday July 14th, The Village hosts a special Comic Art & Craft Show from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., where local artists will showcase (and sell) their wares.
611 5th Ave., Gaslamp
After several hours roaming the exhibit hall, desperation can set in, but under no circumstances should you consume the pizza from the on-site cafe. Bice, an Italian restaurant in the Gaslamp, is a better option. They’re welcoming the Comic-Con crowd with a two-course prix fixe lunch for $28 per person. There’s also a selection of sandwiches for $11 each, or a grab and go cheese plate for $5.95.
425 Island Ave., Gaslamp
People in costumes are one thing… dogs in costume, quite another. The theme of this month’s Canine Cocktails happy hour at Hotel Indigo is “superheroes, villains, and comic book characters,” aka: the perfect occasion for Fido to strut his nerdiest finery. Admission is free (as are treats for the pooches), and there are drink specials for the humans. Thursday, July 12th from 5:30-7pm.
509 9th Ave., East Village
Gaijin Noodle & Sake House’s “dynamic duo” special includes their signature carnitas bao sandwich made to look like the Batman symbol, served alongside a Mango Kakigori sake cocktail designed to resemble Robin, Batman’s trusty sidekick. At $9, it may be worth trying if only to snap an Instagram pic.
627 4th Ave., Gaslamp
Hooters, the Gaslamp’s most popular “breastaurant” will host costume contests at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., daily. Winners receive a VIP Wing Party for 10 people. There’s also a grab & go lunch special for $10, which includes your choice of a beef philly or BBQ pulled pork sandwich with a side and beverage.
410 Market St., Gaslamp
Super Hero Pub Crawl
July 13th starting at 5pm and July 14th starting at noon.
Save the day one drink at a time during San Diego’s first Super Hero Pub Crawl! Always looking to outdo itself, San Diego is adding costumes to its annual Pub Crawl extravaganza in celebration of our vibrant Con culture. Whether you’re Spiderman, Catwoman, or anyone in between, you’ll have access to the Gaslamp Quarter’s best watering holes during the two-day celebration. Drink specials include $2 draft beer and $4 mixed well drinks.
$10 for individual one-day admission, $15 for two days
LOUNGEsix’s “Odd Ball” Party
July 14th, 7pm.
While there’s no doubting Comic Con’s reign as the San Diego event of the summer, the crowd factor can get to be a bit much for many of us. If you’d like an escape from the obscenely long lines and continuous personal space violations, head to LOUNGEsix’s cozy rooftop bar for their inaugural “Odd Ball” party. The poolside terrace is the perfect spot to drink in the San Diego skyline while unwinding from the day’s geeky festivities.
