Ride and Drive at the Car Show

Back in 1998, Volkswagen made a big splash when it brought a half-dozen New Beetles to the car show in San Diego and actually let the patrons drive them. In 2006, Toyota built a big mound of dirt behind the Convention Center and took folks on rides in their then-new FJ Cruiser.

From those humble roots have come the Ride and Drive features that have become popular at car shows around the country. Lines form for the hot vehicles and the folks at Jeep even built a special mountain-simulating course that fits inside the convention, unique to San Diego. Here’s a video»

This year’s San Diego International Auto Show, eight manufacturers will have ride and drive events. Jeep will be back with the Camp Jeep, joined by street drives from Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, electric car hopeful Coda, Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota. Read more»
